Hi,
I have ubuntu 6.10 and this modem:

Now the problem is that the system say me: modem not foud.
Here is my log:

Comment (add a # in front of each lines) of eciadsl-start starting after
# already loaded ... so continue.
...
until
# ===== Synchronization =====

In short, this step is not needed by your modem and in your case eciadsl-start script fail to handle this properly.
Anyway, you should apply the fix for Ubuntu stated on the download page
